Since it was founded 64 years ago, Asel Art Supply has grown from one store in Dallas to nine retail locations throughout the state of Texas, a warehouse, and a college bookstore.

Asel Art Supply, Inc. was founded in 1951 by Kenny Asel, who was joined by his brother Herb Asel shortly thereafter. The brothers had both started in the paint business after serving in WWII and looked for a way to better serve the artists from the student level to the professional level. They opened the doors of their business in January 1951 in Dallas, Texas. In 1973, due to health reasons, the brothers sold the business to a group of investors, one of whom is still with the business. As the business grew, the silent investors sold their shares back to the company. In 1987 an ESOP trust was formed and Asel Art Supply became an employee owned business. The business continues today to be employee owned and family operated.
The first Asel Art Supply location in downtown Dallas was in what is now known as Thanksgiving Square. A second location was opened in the mid 1960s in the current location on Cedar Springs Road. That location now serves as the corporate headquarters.
The business began to expand in the mid 1970s and locations were established in San Antonio, Arlington, Fort Worth, and Austin. A college bookstore in Lubbock, which serves Texas tech University, was added during this period.
Today Asel Art Supply continues to focus on its retail operations with nine art supply stores in Dallas, Plano, Richardson, Denton, Arlington, Fort Worth, Austin, and two sites in San Antonio. Varsity Bookstore is located in Lubbock. A warehouse which serves all stores is located in the Brookhollow warehouse district of Dallas. Asel Art Supply also sells on-line via its website.
Asel Art Supply serves fine artists, commercial and graphic artists, architects, students, and artists of all ages. The bookstore primarily attracts the student community of Texas Tech, but also serves the local community of Lubbock and the wider West Texas area.
Asel Art Supply supports local art groups with competitions, use of meeting rooms for local painting workshops, an art community bulletin board, and other such activities. Asel Art also provides custom kits and reasonably priced supplies to students, their teachers, and businesses.
