New Forth Valley fund launched to help people with hidden costs of cancer
Tuesday 29 September 2026
A new fund to help people in Forth Valley with the hidden costs of a cancer diagnosis has been launched, thanks to new local charity 'GG On Two Wheels'.
raised £10,000 to distribute to people undergoing cancer treatment and experiencing financial crisis. It is open to anyone accessing support at Maggie’s, Forth Valley, located on the grounds of Forth Valley Royal Hospital, in Larbert.
The new fund can be accessed by people who are in immediate need and struggling to cover the cost of essentials. People could use the fund to:
- cover transport costs, such as paying for taxis to attend hospital appointments
- purchase food
- pay for bills to keep their home warm
A soft-launch of the fund took place earlier this month, with a number of people already receiving money to help with day-to-day living costs. Recipients for the fund are identified by a Maggie’s benefits advisor.
Yvonne McIntosh, Centre Head at Maggie’s, Forth Valley, said: “Many people with cancer may experience a drop in income as they need to take time off work to attend appointments, receive treatment and recover, which can make some expenses hard to manage.
“This may include the cost of travelling to and from hospital, and some people who live remotely may even have to pay for accommodation to stay overnight for treatment. Families may also need to pay for expensive household costs, such as a broken boiler or a car repair, which can cause a lot of stress and anxiety if you do not have an income.
“We are so grateful for the GG on Two Wheels team for offering this generous fund to the people we support and launching this partnership, which will help ease financial pressures and enable people to focus on treatment.
All Maggie’s centres have specialist benefits advisors who are able to support those impacted by cancer to understand what benefits and financial support they may be entitled to.
Fund set up in memory of Gaynor
was set up by George Talbot in memory of his wife Gaynor, who died of breast cancer in 2024.
The couple both received support from Maggie’s, and George was inspired to create the fund to help others in financial hardship after experiencing it first hand.
George said: “Grief doesn't just cost you emotionally; it costs you financially through unexpected events you didn't plan for, at the worst possible time.
“That's the hidden cost of cancer nobody warns you about.
ҹɫֱ²¥ is supporting people who fall through that gap every single day, and this partnership means we can be there too.
